Iran's President Proposes New Security Framework Amid Ongoing Conflict
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tehran, March 22 (NationPress) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has suggested the establishment of a security framework involving regional nations aimed at fostering peace, stability, and security in West Asia, free from external intervention. He reiterated the prerequisites necessary to conclude the ongoing conflict.
During a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leaders addressed their bilateral relations and the latest developments in the region and internationally, particularly in light of the recent US and Israeli assaults against Iran, as reported by Xinhua news agency, citing the official Iranian news outlet IRNA.
Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran's demands for terminating the conflict include an immediate halt to the US and Israeli aggressions and assurances that such attacks will not reoccur, according to the report.
He condemned the actions of the United States and Israel for the killings of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, prominent military figures, and civilians, as well as their strikes on the nation’s public infrastructure.
Pezeshkian dismissed assertions from US President Donald Trump, who claimed that the war aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities, highlighting that Iran's former leader was firmly against the development of atomic weapons and had issued the necessary directives to thwart any such attempts.
In response, PM Modi expressed his “deep concern” regarding the rising regional tensions, condemned any assaults on energy infrastructures, and advocated for security in the Strait of Hormuz and the freedom of navigation in the Gulf.
On February 28, Israel and the US conducted coordinated strikes on Tehran and various Iranian cities, resulting in the deaths of Khamenei, senior military personnel, and civilians. Iran retaliated with extensive missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli and US facilities and assets in the Middle East.
