Key Takeaways
Paris, March 27 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged in a significant discussion with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in France this past Friday. The dialogue focused on the evolving situation in West Asia, the necessity for regional stability, and the secure operation of essential global supply chains. Both officials expressed a strong commitment to enhancing their bilateral relationship.
Sybiha reflected on this meeting on X, stating, "I had a productive exchange with my Indian counterpart Dr. S. Jaishankar at the G7 ministerial meeting in France. We explored the situation in the Middle East and underscored the importance of regional stability and the secure operation of crucial global supply chains."
He also mentioned that the two sides coordinated future communications and reiterated their shared goal of bolstering bilateral collaboration.
This meeting occurs against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which reignited on February 28 due to military actions by Israel and the US against Iran, leading to the demise of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and high-ranking military officials. In retaliation, Iran has initiated drone and missile strikes targeting US and Israeli facilities, as well as allied forces in the region.
EAM Jaishankar is presently on a two-day official visit to France to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting at Abbaye des-Vaux-de-Cernay.
During his remarks at a session with invited partners discussing global governance reform, EAM Jaishankar emphasized the pressing need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), optimizing peacekeeping operations, and enhancing humanitarian supply chains.
"I spoke at the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting's session with invited partners on global governance reform, emphasizing the urgency for UNSC reforms, enhancing peacekeeping operations, and improving humanitarian supply chains. I specifically highlighted the Global South’s concerns regarding energy challenges, fertilizer supplies, and food security," EAM Jaishankar shared on X.
In another session, EAM Jaishankar addressed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), noting that the conflict in West Asia underscores the necessity for robust trade routes and secure supply chains.
"I shared insights about IMEC at the second session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with invited partners. The uncertainties stemming from the conflicts in West Asia further validate the need for resilient trade corridors and supply chains," he articulated on X.
"Moreover, India’s Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the European Union, EFTA members, and the UK have amplified the significance of IMEC. I appreciate the broad support and enthusiasm to realize this vital connectivity initiative," he added.
