Dhaka, December 31 (NationPress) Following the conclusion of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar's brief visit to Dhaka, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, emphasized the potential for enhancing Bangladesh-India relations, driven by shared interests, pragmatism, and mutual interdependence.
His comments were made after EAM Jaishankar's four-hour visit, during which he engaged in a short meeting with Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), discussing the future direction of their bilateral ties.
“As Dr S. Jaishankar departed Dhaka after a whirlwind visit, both Bangladesh and India are eager to write a new chapter in their relationship, grounded in shared interests led by pragmatism and interdependence, as briefly discussed with Tarique Rahman,” Hamidullah expressed on X.
During his visit, EAM Jaishankar represented India at the funeral of Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister. He arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to extend the Indian government's condolences to Rahman regarding the passing of his mother and former Prime Minister.
Upon his arrival in Dhaka, EAM Jaishankar met Tarique Rahman and presented him with a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I expressed our deepest condolences on behalf of the Indian government and its people, and I believe that Begum Khaleda Zia's vision and values will continue to shape our partnership,” he noted.
EAM Jaishankar recognized Zia's significant contributions to democracy and voiced optimism about fortifying India-Bangladesh relations following a democratic transition in the wake of the upcoming elections.
Sharing pictures from the meeting, Hamidullah stated on X, “In Dhaka, Dr S. Jaishankar conveyed the condolences of the Indian government as Bangladesh mourns the loss of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, acknowledged her role in democracy, and expressed hope for strengthening ties following the democratic transition during the upcoming elections in February 2026.”
Khaleda Zia, who served as Prime Minister three times and was a prominent BNP leader, passed away early Tuesday morning after a long illness at the age of 80.
She was interred with full state honors beside her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, as reported by local media.
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson, honoring her as a historic leader whose contributions to Bangladesh and its relationship with India will never be forgotten.
