Lula Promises Harsh Consequences for Coup Conspirators Following Recovery

Sao Paulo, Dec 16 (NationPress) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has pledged to harshly penalize individuals involved in the 2022 coup attempt.

I believe that General Braga has every right to the presumption of innocence, Lula stated during a press conference, referring to the detained retired general Walter Braga Netto, who formerly held the position of defense minister under President Jair Bolsonaro.

The event took place at Sirio Libanes Hospital shortly after Lula's release, marking his first public appearance following emergency skull surgery last week. His medical team and first lady, Rosangela da Silva, were by his side.

Braga Netto, who faces accusations of attempting to interfere with investigations, was arrested on Saturday following a directive from the Supreme Federal Court. Reports from the Federal Police indicate that Bolsonaro was allegedly orchestrating a coup in 2022 to prevent Lula from taking office.

Lula emphasized that it is unacceptable to have senior military officials implicated in a plot to assassinate the president, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

After his release, Lula will operate from his residence in Sao Paulo until Thursday, when he is scheduled for a CAT scan to obtain clearance for travel to Brasilia to resume duties at the Planalto Palace.

The 79-year-old president had experienced severe headaches and was admitted for emergency surgery after a hematoma was discovered between his brain and meningeal membrane.

Doctors confirmed that there were no injuries or lasting effects from the hematoma.

This medical issue was associated with Lula's fall at the presidential residence, the Palacio da Alvorada, in late October, where he sustained a head injury requiring five stitches, which led to the cancellation of several engagements, including his trip to the BRICS summit in Russia.

It has been confirmed by the presidency's Secretary of Social Communication, Paulo Pimenta, that the Brazilian President will aim for reelection in 2026.

In a conversation with CNN Brasil, Pimenta reassured that the president is in good health following medical procedures for a brain bleed, asserting he is the most qualified and prepared person to continue leading the nation.

I have no doubt that President Lula is the most qualified and capable person. He will certainly be our candidate in 2026 to maintain our vision for the country,” Pimenta was cited as saying by the Xinhua news agency.
