Historic Bilateral Meeting in Bratislava

Earlier on the same day, Modi and Fico held wide-ranging talks in Bratislava, covering trade and investment, defence and security, technology and innovation, space and nuclear energy, education and culture, and people-to-people exchanges. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues, including reform of the United Nations.

The Indian delegation included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, signalling the strategic weight New Delhi attached to the visit.

India-Slovakia Ties Elevated to Comprehensive Partnership

In a significant diplomatic outcome, both leaders agreed to elevate India-Slovakia ties to a Comprehensive Partnership. The meeting produced concrete agreements spanning digital technology, defence, cybersecurity, post-quantum technologies, audio-visual co-production, mobility, and scientific cooperation including nuclear collaboration.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the leaders 'noted that the implementation of the historic India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will unlock substantial opportunities in trade, manufacturing, investment and employment generation, particularly for the youth.'

First-Ever Visit by an Indian PM to Slovakia

Modi arrived in Bratislava on Sunday for a two-day State Visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country's independence in 1993. He was received at his hotel by Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar with a traditional Slovak welcome, before being accorded a ceremonial reception ahead of the bilateral meeting.

Upon arrival, Modi said the visit would 'provide an opportunity to deepen ties between the two nations and explore new avenues of cooperation.'

Context: A Deepening India-Europe Engagement

The Bratislava visit follows a series of high-level exchanges: President Droupadi Murmu undertook a State Visit to Slovakia in April 2025, and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini visited India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026. This pattern points to a deliberate and accelerating diplomatic cadence between the two nations, set against the broader backdrop of India's deepening engagement with Central Europe and the push to finalise the long-pending India-EU FTA.

With the Comprehensive Partnership now formalised, both governments are expected to operationalise joint working groups across the agreed sectors in the months ahead.
