Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, 15 June announced the elevation of India-Slovakia bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership during a joint press conference with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava — marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia.

A Historic First

The visit breaks new diplomatic ground: no Indian Prime Minister had previously travelled to Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. Modi described the moment as 'a historic occasion,' crediting Fico's 'unwavering commitment' for helping elevate the relationship. 'I am pleased that meeting him today has given me the opportunity to witness a historic moment in our bilateral ties,' Modi said at the joint press meet.

The two leaders agreed that the upgraded Comprehensive Partnership reflects 'shared trust, shared priorities, and a shared vision for the future,' in Modi's words — a formulation that signals intent to deepen engagement across trade, technology, and strategic sectors.

Trade, Automobiles, and the India-EU FTA

Modi and Fico held what both sides described as detailed discussions on giving 'new direction and fresh momentum' to bilateral cooperation. Key sectors identified for expanded collaboration include automobiles, railways, advanced manufacturing, and green technologies.

Notably, Modi extended 'special gratitude' to Fico for Slovakia's support in finalising the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) — a deal that has been under negotiation for years and carries significant implications for Indian exporters, startups, and traders seeking access to the European single market. Modi said both sides would 'work towards its early implementation.'

Digital Technology and the AI Chair

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on digital technology was signed during the visit, aimed at opening new avenues of cooperation in digital public infrastructure — an area where India has built globally recognised capabilities through platforms such as UPI and Aadhaar.

In a significant academic and strategic signal, an India Chair on Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being established at a Slovak university. Modi described AI as 'a powerful medium for serving and advancing humanity,' adding that the 'future of AI should be based not only on innovation, but also on trust, responsibility, and human dignity.' This positions the partnership within a broader global conversation on responsible AI governance.

Space Cooperation: A 2017 Foundation

Modi recalled that India launched Slovakia's first satellite in 2017, citing this as a foundation for deeper space-sector engagement. He invited Slovak companies to join India's rapidly expanding space ecosystem, which has seen a surge in private participation following the liberalisation of the sector in recent years.

With the Comprehensive Partnership framework now in place, both governments are expected to operationalise the agreements signed during the visit.
