Seoul, Jan 26 (NationPress) North Korea's foreign ministry declared on Sunday that Pyongyang must uphold “the strongest retaliation” against the US as long as it dismisses the nation’s sovereignty and security concerns.

The North’s foreign ministry voiced these concerns while blaming the joint air exercises conducted by South Korea and the US, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). This statement came just days after US President Donald Trump indicated a desire to reconnect with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, according to Yonhap news agency.

“The situation emphasizes that the DPRK must respond to the US with the strongest measures from A to Z as long as it ignores the sovereignty and security interests of the DPRK, which is the most effective strategy for addressing the US,” stated the ministry.

The term DPRK refers to the official designation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

This announcement followed Trump's characterization of Kim as a “smart guy” and his expressed intent to reach out to the North's leader once more.

The foreign ministry highlighted a four-day joint aerial drill between Seoul and Washington held at an air base in South Korea's Wonju last week, along with another recent trilateral air exercise involving Japan. It labeled these activities a “serious challenge” to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The ministry cautioned that “such actions will invoke a reciprocal response,” noting that the nation “will not tolerate any imbalance of power ... and will take the strongest counteraction to safeguard its sovereign rights and security interests, while ensuring peace and stability in the region.”
