One Fatality Reported Following Damage to Two Russian Oil Tankers Amid Severe Weather Conditions

Moscow, Dec 15 (NationPress) A tragic incident occurred when one person lost their life after two Russian oil tankers sustained damage in the Kerch Strait close to the Black Sea due to adverse weather conditions, as reported by the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations on Sunday.

The ministry indicated that the damaged tanker Volgoneft-212 ran aground, while the other tanker, Volgoneft-239, was left drifting in the sea. Initially, reports stated that there were a total of 29 crew members on board, but the tankers had 13 and 14 crew members, respectively, according to the Xinhua news agency.

It was confirmed that one crew member aboard the Volgoneft-212 tragically passed away, although the remaining crew members were rescued, as the report detailed.

The TASS news agency reported that each tanker was carrying in excess of four tonnes of fuel oil. Furthermore, it cited local water transport authorities stating that oil spills have been documented.

Regional authorities have initiated criminal investigations focusing on traffic safety violations and maritime operations that resulted in a fatality due to negligence.
