Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, February 26 (NationPress) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects at the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem on Thursday, where he laid a wreath to honor the victims of the Holocaust.
Accompanying him were Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Dani Dayan, Chairman of Yad Vashem, as they toured the Holocaust Memorial and Museum dedicated to documenting the tragic events of the Holocaust.
The visit featured a tour of the Book of Names, a significant installation that lists the names of 4.8 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, alongside a memorial ceremony held in the Hall of Remembrance. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also signed the guest book at Yad Vashem.
This marks PM Modi's second visit to Yad Vashem, having previously attended the memorial in July 2017 during his last trip to Israel.
“Honoring the memory of Holocaust victims and reaffirming our joint commitment to peace and human dignity. PM Modi visited Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre, for the second time, laying a wreath and paying tribute to the victims. He also visited the moving Book of Names Hall, which serves as a powerful reminder of millions lost during the Holocaust,” stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), on X.
“The memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the brutal past and our collective resolve to combat injustice and create a better future,” he added.
During PM Modi’s previous visit in 2017, he was similarly accompanied by Prime Minister Netanyahu.
“I am profoundly moved by my visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial museum. It serves as both a poignant reminder of the unspeakable evil of the past and a testament to the resilience of the Jewish people. As we confront issues of conflict, intolerance, and hatred today, Yad Vashem reflects the societal challenges we face globally. By remembering past injustices and their toll on humanity, we empower future generations to make compassionate and just choices,” PM Modi noted in the Yad Vashem Guest Book on July 3, 2017.
Currently, PM Modi is on a two-day state visit to Israel, having received a warm welcome from Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on Wednesday. He also addressed a Special Plenary of the Knesset in Jerusalem - marking the first time an Indian Prime Minister has addressed the Israeli parliament.
