Key Takeaways
Islamabad, March 16 (NationPress) Tragically, eight women lost their lives and more than 50 others sustained injuries on Monday when a building roof collapsed during a welfare payment event in the Rahim Yar Khan district of Punjab, Pakistan, according to local news reports.
Officials indicated that the roof, allegedly made of inferior materials, could not support the weight of the large gathering and suddenly gave way, burying several women under the rubble.
"At least eight women died and over 50 were injured on Monday when the roof of a Benazir Income Support Centre collapsed in a suburban area. Reports state that the incident took place near Chak No. 125, where around 200 women had assembled to receive their payments from the Benazir Income Support Programme. The frail roof of the shop collapsed unexpectedly, trapping many women underneath the debris," reported Pakistan's Dunya News channel.
Rescue teams quickly transported the injured to Shaikh Zayed Hospital, where five women were declared dead upon arrival. The district administration has announced a state of emergency at the hospital, and investigations into the incident are currently underway.
Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa informed Xinhua news agency that the tragedy occurred as over 200 women were gathered on the first floor of the building awaiting their payments from the Benazir Income Support Programme.
One eyewitness reported that seven women died at the scene, and many others were hurt during a subsequent stampede following the collapse, although officials have not substantiated this claim.
According to Pakistan's Express Tribune, this tragic incident echoes a similar event from two years ago, during which at least 12 individuals, including three children, lost their lives in a stampede while receiving Zakat at a private company in the Sindh Industrial and Trading Estate area.
A volunteer from the Edhi Foundation noted that in that previous incident, a stampede resulted from a falling power line during ration distribution, although this claim was later denied.
