Washington, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Senate voted on Monday to confirm Marco Rubio as President Donald Trump's Secretary of State, marking him as the first prominent Cabinet official for the new administration to secure approval from the Chamber, as reported by media outlets.

The confirmation took place mere hours after Trump was inaugurated as President, according to CNN.

Rubio, who has been a Republican Senator from Florida since 2011, garnered significant backing from numerous Senate Democrats, who deemed him highly qualified for the position.

In an impressive political shift, Rubio transformed from being a challenger to Trump into a supporter in recent years. He is now set to assume an essential role as a senior official in Trump's administration, CNN reported.

Following his unsuccessful attempt in the GOP presidential primaries in 2016, Rubio enhanced his foreign policy expertise as the leading Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, while fostering connections within his party and across party lines.

The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, has appointed state Attorney General Ashley Moody to take over the seat that Rubio will vacate.

Rubio's nomination received a positive response from many Senate Democrats. During the confirmation hearing, New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, praised Rubio as "well-qualified to serve as Secretary of State".

While answering questions from Senators, Rubio expressed his endorsement for NATO and a bipartisan bill he co-sponsored, which stipulates that the US cannot withdraw from the alliance without Senate consent or legislative approval.

Rubio also emphasized the necessity for the US to adopt a firm stance regarding China during his confirmation hearing, labeling the Chinese Communist Party as a "potent" and "dangerous" rival.

"They pose challenges across various domains, including technology, industry, economy, geopolitics, and science, making it a significant issue that will shape the 21st century," Rubio stated.

He noted, "We have allowed them to exploit situations, and the Chinese acted as any nation would under those conditions, so we now face the consequences."

"To effectively confront China, we need to strengthen our domestic industrial capabilities and ensure that the United States is not dependent on any single nation for critical supply chains," he added.

In addressing questions about Russia's conflict with Ukraine, Rubio remarked that it is "unrealistic to expect" Ukraine to repel Russian forces to pre-2022 invasion positions and emphasized that the US should advocate for an end to the conflict, as reported by CNN.

Rubio stated that he and Trump concurred on the necessity for the war to conclude and criticized the Biden administration for failing to establish a clear "end goal" for the conflict.

"What Russian President Vladimir Putin has done is unacceptable, but this war must conclude, and the official policy of the United States should reflect our desire for its resolution," he concluded.
