Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Moscow, Feb 12 (NationPress) Russia has confirmed its decision to skip the inaugural meeting of the US-led Board of Peace, as announced by the country's Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
During a news briefing, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated, "Russia will not participate in the forthcoming Board of Peace meeting."
She also mentioned that efforts to define Russia's stance regarding the Board of Peace are still in progress, as reported by the leading news agency Tass.
This announcement precedes the first meeting set to take place in the US on February 19.
Previously, Sergei Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, indicated that Moscow is actively working on its position concerning the Board of Peace and is evaluating the cautious responses from various countries in both the West and the East, including permanent members of the UN Security Council.
On January 22, Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, expressed willingness to allocate USD 1 billion from assets that have been frozen in the US to support the Board of Peace initiative, even before making a definitive decision about participation.
Last month, Donald Trump, the President of the US, inaugurated the Board of Peace at Davos, outlining a US-supported initiative aimed at establishing peace, ensuring open crossings, demilitarizing armed groups, and initiating a long-term reconstruction and economic revival in Gaza. This launch followed the signing of the Board of Peace charter.
Trump described the day as "a very exciting day," portraying the initiative as a transition from conflict to rebuilding.
He later framed Gaza's future in economic terms, asserting that redevelopment and geography could transform the region's prospects.
“As a real estate person at heart, it’s all about location,” Trump stated. “Consider this location by the sea. Just imagine the potential of this beautiful property for countless individuals.”
