Moscow, Feb 10 (NationPress) Relations between Russia and the United States are approaching a breaking point, according to Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Monday.
Ryabkov reiterated that the tensions in bilateral relations are critical, noting that the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House could potentially shift US foreign policy.
During a press briefing, the official indicated that there are no current plans for discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump.
“Nevertheless, the subject is under consideration, and as circumstances evolve, I anticipate that agreements will be reached and announced at the right moment,” Ryabkov stated.
Moreover, he mentioned that the new administration in the US has shown a willingness to re-establish communication with Moscow.
“Despite the contradictory remarks made by Trump and his associates, his team has displayed a degree of interest in renewing discussions with Russia, which had been halted by the Democrats,” Ryabkov added.
He emphasized that Moscow is open to dialogue, particularly regarding a potential resolution to the Ukraine crisis, provided that discussions are based on equality and mutually beneficial terms.
He noted that “a narrow window of opportunity” has emerged under the Trump administration to restore normal relations, urging Washington to decide whether to capitalize on this.
According to Ryabkov, employing ultimatums, inflammatory comments, or attempts to coerce Moscow into unreasonable agreements will hinder Russia-US relations and bilateral dialogue.
The New York Post reported that Trump mentioned discussing the resolution of the conflict in Ukraine over the phone with Putin.
However, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated he could “neither confirm nor deny” any recent communication between Putin and Trump when questioned by reporters.
