Russian FM Asserts Syrian Opposition Groups Should Not Dominate Syria

Doha, Dec 8 (NationPress) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the Syrian opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) is a terrorist organisation, asserting that these groups should not be permitted to govern Syria.

While participating in the Doha Forum 2024 in Qatar, Lavrov underlined the contribution of the Russian Air Force in aiding the Syrian government to fight against opposition forces, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

During a trilateral meeting with the foreign ministers of Turkey and Iran, Lavrov announced that the three nations had agreed on the necessity of collaborative efforts to secure a peaceful settlement, stressing that hostilities in Syria must cease immediately.

Since November 27, Syrian rebel factions, led by the HTS, have initiated significant offensives on various fronts within Syria, making advances on territories held by the government after capturing vital cities such as Aleppo and Hama.

The Doha Forum is an annual gathering that addresses regional and global issues and challenges. This year's forum, themed 'The Innovation Imperative,' is occurring over Saturday and Sunday.
