South Korea Engages with Iran and Others for Safe Passage in the Strait of Hormuz
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, March 21 (NationPress) South Korea is engaged in intensive discussions with multiple nations, including Iran, to facilitate a rapid restoration of normalcy in the Strait of Hormuz. This comes after Tehran expressed its willingness to permit vessels headed to Japan to transit through this vital maritime route, which had been nearly inaccessible due to the ongoing Middle Eastern crisis, as noted by a foreign ministry representative on Saturday.
"The government is vigilantly observing the evolving situation in the Middle East and is actively seeking strategies to safeguard our citizens while ensuring the security of our energy supply routes," the official stated. "We are maintaining open lines of communication with key nations, including Iran."
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi informed the Kyodo News Agency that Tehran is prepared to allow Japan-bound ships to navigate this crucial oil passage following necessary discussions with Tokyo, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for the transit of over 20 percent of the globe's oil trade.
All routes accessible to oil tankers fall within Iranian territorial waters, making this strait a vital corridor for nations in Eastern Asia, particularly South Korea and Japan.
On Friday, Seoul announced its intention to collaborate with seven other nations, including European countries and Japan, in issuing a joint statement that condemns Iran's aggressive actions in the Gulf and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Escalating tensions followed U.S. and Israeli airstrikes, resulting in Iran's near-complete blockade of the strait and raising fears of a global energy crisis.
In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that his administration is contemplating "winding down" military operations against Iran while urging South Korea, China, Japan, and other nations to engage in efforts to secure the crucial Strait of Hormuz.
Trump's statement on social media claimed that the United States is nearing its objectives in the military campaign, which aims to dismantle Iran's missile capabilities, defense industrial base, and naval and air forces, while preventing its acquisition of nuclear weapons.
"We are getting very close to achieving our objectives as we consider winding down our extensive military efforts in the Middle East concerning the terrorist regime of Iran," Trump posted on Truth Social.
