South Korea: Police Launch Inquiry into Treason Allegations Against President Yoon

Seoul, Dec 5 (NationPress) On Thursday, South Korean authorities commenced an inquiry into allegations that President Yoon Suk Yeol engaged in treason by declaring martial law earlier this week.

The investigation has been allocated to the security investigation team within the National Office of Investigation of the National Police Agency following the filing of two complaints, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

One of the complaints was presented by the minor opposition Rebuilding Korea Party, while the other was submitted by a collective of 59 activists.

The allegations not only target Yoon but also involve former Defence Minister Kim Yong-Hyun, Army Chief of Staff Gen Park An-su, and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, accusing them of treason and other related offenses due to their involvement in the declaration and subsequent retraction of martial law on Tuesday.

Both the prosecution and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials have also received complaints alleging treason against Yoon and are evaluating whether to initiate their own inquiries or forward the cases to the police.

As per legal sources, Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung has instructed prosecutors to commence their own investigation and has assigned the case to a public security investigation unit at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office.

On Wednesday, minor opposition parties, including the Labor Party, lodged complaints against Yoon, Kim, and Park with the prosecution, accusing them of treason.

With Shim's directive, both the police and prosecutors are anticipated to probe the matters concurrently.
