US President Donald Trump held back-to-back Oval Office meetings on Tuesday, 28 July with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as Washington navigated simultaneous crises in Ukraine and the Middle East. Both sessions were closed to the press, with the White House describing them only as “positive and productive.”

What Happened in the Meetings

Zelenskyy arrived at the White House at approximately 9:40 a.m., entering through a side entrance of the West Wing. Netanyahu departed shortly after 12:25 p.m., according to reports. The Israeli Prime Minister’s office later released photographs of the two leaders together, with an Israeli official describing the session as “very positive.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the meetings on X, stating: “President Trump has concluded his meetings in the Oval Office with President Zelensky and Prime Minister Netanyahu. Both meetings were positive and productive!”

Iran at the Centre of US-Israel Talks

The Trump-Netanyahu discussions were expected to focus on the war with Iran, ongoing negotiations involving Lebanon, and efforts to expand the Abraham Accords, according to a White House official. Netanyahu was also reportedly set to present intelligence on alleged Iranian activity at Pickaxe Mountain, an underground facility believed to be linked to Tehran’s nuclear programme.

However, Trump appeared irritated that Netanyahu had publicly telegraphed his plans before the meeting. “I heard Bibi announce that,” Trump told Fox News. “I said, ‘Why don’t you just tell it to me? Why do you have to announce it to the world?’”

The exchange underscores a visible divergence between the two allies: Trump has signalled a preference for renewed diplomacy with Tehran, while Israel has pushed for sustained pressure. Trump acknowledged the gap on Monday, saying, “We have a little difference, but pretty close.” On Tuesday, he again warned Iran that the United States could strike bridges and power plants if Tehran failed to reach an agreement.

Ukraine Seeks Air Defence and Peace Progress

Zelenskyy’s Washington visit centred on securing continued US support for Ukraine and reviving stalled peace negotiations with Russia. The Ukrainian leader said after the meeting that he had discussed air defence systems and renewed diplomacy with Trump.

Zelenskyy arrived seeking concrete progress on sanctions against Russia, a drone agreement, Patriot air defence systems, and a framework for peace talks. He was also scheduled to meet lawmakers and address a gathering of the full Senate.

White House Position on Russia-Ukraine War

The White House reaffirmed Trump’s commitment to ending the conflict, stating: “The president and his team remain committed to continuing to play a constructive role in ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and he remains optimistic that we’ll ultimately get a peace deal done.”

The dual summits reflect the extraordinary diplomatic pressure on the Trump administration, which is simultaneously managing two active conflict zones while attempting to hold together alliances with differing strategic priorities.
