Washington, Jan 7 (NationPress) US President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to maintain their unity and challenge historical trends, as he forecasted a significant victory for the party in the 2026 midterm elections. During his speech at the House GOP member retreat, he expressed support for Speaker Mike Johnson and encouraged lawmakers to rally around his agenda.

Trump asserted that the Republicans are on the verge of achieving what he deemed an extraordinary result. “Now we're going to make history and break records with the epic midterm victory that we're going to pull off,” he stated.

Historically, midterm elections have been challenging for the party in the White House. Trump recognized this trend but contended that his presidency has altered the dynamics. “It just doesn't seem to happen for people that win the presidency,” he commented, adding, “even if it's a successful presidency, they don't win.”

He characterized the current House majority as exceptionally cohesive despite its slim margin. “This was not a big majority, but it's a unified majority,” Trump noted, commending lawmakers for their “12 months of unprecedented success in 2025.”

In a speech exceeding an hour, Trump praised House leadership and unequivocally endorsed Speaker Mike Johnson. “He has my complete and total endorsement,” Trump remarked, referring to Johnson as “tough as anybody in the room.”

However, Trump acknowledged the constraints posed by the thin Republican majority. “You can't be tough when you have a majority of three,” he cautioned, warning that internal discord could hinder legislative efforts.

Trump also paid homage to Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who passed away the previous day. “I want to express our tremendous sorrow at the loss of a great member,” Trump stated, describing LaMalfa as “a fierce champion on California water issues.”

He noted that LaMalfa “voted with me 100 percent of the time” and portrayed him as a lawmaker who never needed convincing. “He was with us right from the beginning,” Trump shared.

Additionally, Trump mentioned that Rep. Jim Baird and his wife were recuperating from a serious car accident. “They're going to be OK,” he assured.

In his address, Trump emphasized that party discipline and unity are crucial for electoral success. “Just stay together,” he urged, adding that Republicans had “all of the policy” while Democrats “stick together like glue.”

He accused Democrats of prospering from internal unity while pursuing policies he deemed detrimental. “They have a horrible policy,” Trump asserted. “But they do stick together.”

Trump encouraged Republicans to take his message back to their districts. “You have so much ammunition,” he remarked. “All you have to do is sell it.”

The House GOP retreat is part of the party’s early strategy to align messaging and legislative priorities ahead of the midterms, which will determine control of Congress during the latter half of Trump's term.

Traditionally, US midterm elections have often served as a referendum on the incumbent president, with voters shifting power to the opposing party. Currently, Republicans hold the House by one of the narrowest margins in modern history.
