The National Investigation Agency of India has taken seven foreign individuals into custody, comprising six Ukrainians and one American, under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Investigators assert that the group utilized India as a transit point to access conflict regions in Myanmar and provide assistance to armed factions.
Authorities are looking into whether the accused entered restricted zones without permission and illegally crossed into Myanmar. A court ruling on March 16 extended their detention through March 27.
Reports suggest multiple Ukrainian nationals entered India on tourist visas, journeyed to Mizoram without necessary approvals, and then proceeded into Myanmar. Allegations claim they participated in training ethnic armed groups and facilitated drone operations. The FIR indicates that the detainees may have offered military-style training and other forms of support that could be construed as mercenary conduct.
The suspects were apprehended at airports in Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata before facing court proceedings. Investigators are endeavoring to identify associates and investigate a broader network.
Ukraine has expressed concerns regarding due process, stating that its embassy "did not receive any official notice" regarding the detentions and has requested "immediate access" to the detainees. While embassy officials attended the hearing, they were "not allowed to communicate directly" with the detainees.
The Ukrainian ambassador has met with personnel from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, delivering a note of protest requesting the release of the detainees and access to them. The embassy confirmed it is in contact with the families and is closely monitoring the situation.
The US embassy in India has stated, "We are aware of the situation; however, for privacy reasons, we cannot provide comments on matters involving US citizens."
