New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) The apprehension of an American mercenary, Matthew Aaron VanDyke, alongside six Ukrainian nationals by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), has unveiled a more extensive plot targeting the northeastern regions of India.

The suspects have admitted to providing training to ethnic armed factions based in Myanmar, prompting the NIA to seek out their local accomplices. An agency official stated that such operations would not be feasible without local support.

Currently, seven individuals have been detained, with indications that there could be an additional nine members involved in this network. Another official mentioned that the NIA is investigating the Indian ties to this network, revealing a broader scheme where these individuals and their foreign handlers intended to transform the northeast into a corridor for international mercenaries.

This development suggests that the areas along the India-Myanmar border are also being utilized for training operatives to execute attacks in various nations.

In custody are Mathew VanDyke and Ukrainian nationals including Maksym Honcharuk, Petro Hubra, Ivan Sukmanovskyi, Marian Stefankiv, Taras Slyviak, and Viktor Kaminskyi, facing charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The training provided extended beyond conventional combat tactics, incorporating drone technology. Investigators discovered that the accused had successfully smuggled drones and jamming equipment from Europe, using tourist visas as a guise for their illicit activities.

This group has reportedly been active since 2024, frequently traveling to Myanmar to train insurgents in drone warfare while facilitating the import of sophisticated drone apparatus and electronic jamming devices from Europe.

According to an official from the Intelligence Bureau, this sets a perilous precedent. The network appears to be more extensive than initially assessed, with these individuals committed to a long-term objective targeting the northeast.

The official noted that in recent years, numerous visitors have arrived in the Northeast, particularly Mizoram, many of whom were not genuine tourists. These individuals may have engaged in reconnaissance missions and met with insurgent group members for recruitment purposes, another official stated.

This issue was also raised by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma in the state assembly in 2024. This incident serves as a critical alert, leading to increased scrutiny of visitors to the northeastern states.

The apprehension of these individuals and the alarming findings did not occur suddenly. The NIA has been monitoring the situation for three months, keeping a close watch on the suspects.

Another official remarked that the porous border of Mizoram has become advantageous for foreign mercenaries. Due to the nature of this border and the assistance from certain Myanmar-based groups, mercenaries can easily conduct training sessions and smuggle drones and other weaponry.

Intelligence agencies indicate a clear resurgence of insurgency in the northeast. The sophistication of this operation and the involvement of foreign nationals highlight the lengths to which these elements are willing to go to disrupt peace in the region.

Officials emphasize the need for a thorough investigation of this case to understand the larger implications, while also prioritizing security at the border. India is set to collaborate closely with Russia on this issue, as Russia provided the initial tip-off that led the NIA to monitor these individuals for three months before taking action.

Local police are also faced with a significant challenge. It is crucial to identify every local participant and their modules in the northeast to prevent similar incidents in the future. The situation in the region remains delicate, and foreign elements are likely to attempt to exploit it and incite tensions.

Another official stated that considerable effort has been made to restore normalcy in the northeast, which has not been well-received by many foreign elements. They realize that if violence erupts in this area, it will be a monumental task to re-establish peace, the official added.
