United Nations, Nov 26 (NationPress) The United Nations has officially launched the process of selecting and appointing the next Secretary-General of the UN.
Annalena Baerbock, the president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), announced in a statement that she has signed a joint letter with Michael Imran Kanu, the president of the UN Security Council for November, who is also the permanent representative of Sierra Leone to the UN. This formalizes the initiation of the selection and appointment process for the next Secretary-General, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
With the release of this joint letter, the UNGA president and the Security Council president are inviting UN member states to put forward nominees for the Secretary-General position, which will begin on January 1, 2027. The letter emphasizes the importance of considering women as candidates.
As the UNGA president, Baerbock stated that she aims to ensure the process embodies the principles of the United Nations Charter and reflects the best of our collective commitments and values.
“The selection of the next Secretary-General occurs at a critical juncture for the UN. We face escalating conflicts, a swiftly worsening climate crisis, increasing humanitarian demands, persistent challenges in implementing the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, alongside growing resistance to human rights,” said Baerbock.
The multilateral system, with the UN at its core, is under significant financial and political strain, and as Baerbock noted, “the world requires the United Nations now more than ever.”
“The global community is looking to the next Secretary-General for robust, dedicated, and effective leadership in advancing the three pillars of the UN: peace and security, human rights, and development, while ensuring the UN is prepared for future challenges,” remarked the UNGA president.
Antonio Guterres, the current Secretary-General and the ninth individual to hold the position, has been in office since January 2017.
