US Increases Travel Warnings for Bahrain and Qatar Amid Iran Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, March 2 (NationPress) In response to the recent escalation of US military actions in Iran, the United States has upgraded its travel advisories for Bahrain and Qatar to Level 3, citing security threats and possible disruptions throughout the Middle East.
The State Department announced the change for Bahrain on February 28, indicating that it had authorized the departure of non-emergency US government staff and their families due to concerns about safety. The advisory level has officially moved from Level 2 to Level 3.
The advisory advises: “Reconsider Travel to Bahrain due to risks of terrorism and armed conflict.”
It further noted that following the initiation of hostilities with Iran on February 28, there exists a persistent threat of drone and missile strikes from Iran, along with significant interruptions to commercial air travel.
The State Department also highlighted that terrorist organizations are actively planning potential attacks in Bahrain, which could occur with little to no warning.
On a similar note, Qatar’s Travel Advisory was raised to Level 3 on March 1, escalating from Level 1. This change also permits the departure of non-emergency personnel and their families due to security risks.
The updated advisory states: “Reconsider Travel to Qatar due to armed conflict threats.”
It cited the same regional tensions, again mentioning the ongoing threat of drone and missile attacks from Iran and disruptions to air traffic.
Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and/or a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) for the area, including Qatar, due to risks posed to civil aviation from the prevailing political and military tensions.
Just a day prior, the State Department had issued a “Worldwide Caution.”
Following the initiation of US military actions in Iran, Americans worldwide, especially those in the Middle East, are urged to adhere to the guidance provided in the most recent security alerts from their nearest US embassy or consulate.
The alert further cautioned that travelers may encounter disruptions due to periodic airspace closures and advised Americans globally to exercise increased caution.
Both advisories recommend US citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), stay updated with local media, develop communication plans, and review security reports for the respective countries.
Level 3 advisories—“Reconsider Travel”—are issued when there are substantial safety and security risks, falling short of the highest Level 4 advisory which advises against travel altogether.
