Is the US tightening its stance on Iran as talks proceed?

Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 13 (NationPress) The White House announced on Monday that President Donald Trump is actively seeking diplomatic relations with Iran while ensuring that military options remain available, as protests persist within the nation and clandestine communications indicate a different stance from Tehran.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated that the President’s primary aim is to avert further violence while evaluating private communications from Iranian officials.
“He certainly doesn't want to witness people being killed in the streets of Tehran, and sadly, that's the reality we are facing,” Leavitt mentioned during a press briefing at the White House.
When inquired about whether the administration is still pursuing complete denuclearization, Leavitt refrained from detailing specific conditions but emphasized the President’s adaptability and readiness to intensify actions if deemed necessary.
“One thing President Trump excels at is keeping all options open, and airstrikes are among the numerous choices available to the Commander in Chief,” she remarked.
Simultaneously, she reiterated that diplomacy remains the administration’s primary strategy.
“Diplomacy is always the first option for the President,” Leavitt affirmed, adding that the messages received privately from Iran contrast sharply with the public statements made by the regime.
“What you're hearing from the Iranian regime publicly is vastly different from the communications the administration is receiving privately, and I believe the President is keen to explore those communications,” she noted.
Leavitt indicated that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff continues to play a pivotal role in diplomatic efforts regarding Iran.
“I understand that Steve Witkoff will remain a crucial figure in diplomacy concerning Iran,” she stated.
She also highlighted that Tehran is aware of the President’s previous actions and his readiness to act decisively.
“However, it’s important to note that the President is unafraid to utilize military options when he considers it necessary, and the Iranians are well aware of that,” Leavitt concluded.
These remarks arise amidst increasing tensions following unrest in Iran and renewed scrutiny of the US strategy towards the Islamic Republic.
Earlier that day, Trump met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House.
