Kolkata Rape and Murder Case:

On 9 August, a 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, was raped and murdered within the college premises. Her lifeless body was discovered in a seminar room on campus.

On August 10, a 33-year-old male civic volunteer was apprehended under suspicion of the crime.

Three days later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI. Junior doctors in West Bengal went on a 42-day strike, demanding a comprehensive investigation and enhanced security in hospitals.

Wayanad Landslide:

On the night of 30 July, a catastrophic landslide hit Wayanad district in Kerala, leading to significant destruction over vast areas.

The confirmed death toll from the landslide exceeded 231, with estimates suggesting that over 420 individuals may have perished.

In the aftermath, rescue operations were initiated in various affected regions.

The devastation was heartrending, with the disaster resulting in a financial loss estimated at Rs 1,200 crore.

Gruesome Murder in Bengaluru:

The entire nation was horrified by the murder of Mahalakshmi in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The perpetrator brutally murdered his girlfriend, Mahalakshmi, dismembered her body into 59 pieces, and stored them in the refrigerator.

In his suicide note, he stated that he committed this heinous act because he was exasperated with Mahalakshmi's behavior, confessing to the murder on September 3.

Tirupati Laddu Controversy:

A controversy arose regarding the use of animal fat in the prasadam (sacred offering) at the Tirupati Temple.

The issue surfaced on September 18 when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader N. Chandrababu Naidu claimed that animal fat was mixed into the sacred laddus.

This allegation placed the Tirupati temple administration under scrutiny and sparked an extensive debate about the sanctity of temple offerings.

Reasi Terrorist Attack:

On June 9, terrorists targeted a bus in the Pouni area of Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The bus, which was en route from Shiv Khori to Katra, was fired upon by the attackers. The bus subsequently fell into a gorge, leading to the deaths of 9 individuals, including a child.

This incident underscored the persistent security challenges in the region.

Hathras Stampede Incident:

On July 2, a tragic stampede occurred in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, following a religious satsang (spiritual gathering), resulting in the deaths of 123 individuals.

The tragedy unfolded as thousands gathered for the satsang, and due to inadequate security measures by the police and administration, a massive stampede erupted, causing many to be crushed.

In the wake of the disaster, the spiritual leader of the gathering, Bhole Baba (Narayan Sakar Hari), relocated to Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.

The Hottest Year in History:

2024 has been recorded as the hottest year ever. Due to climate change, global temperatures surged to unprecedented levels.

India was not exempt from this trend, facing extreme heat in July and August that significantly disrupted daily life. The intense heat waves raised alarm about the escalating effects of climate change worldwide.
