Key Takeaways
Gadag (Karnataka), March 24 (NationPress) - A total of 24 individuals sustained injuries during a violent altercation between the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities in Chikkavaddatti village of Mundargi taluk in Gadag district, sparked by a disagreement over a water issue, police reported on Tuesday.
The situation has been brought under control, and the district administration is planning to hold a peace meeting.
Police, overseen by senior officials, are continuing to monitor the village closely to avert any further incidents.
Officials indicated that the conflict erupted when a youth from the SC community allegedly drank water from a borewell situated on land owned by an ST community farmer. What began as a minor dispute rapidly escalated into a large-scale conflict, with members from both sides gathering in groups and engaging in physical confrontations.
During the brawl, participants wielded sticks, wooden clubs, and stones, resulting in numerous injuries. Among the injured were women from the SC community, with three individuals suffering serious head injuries and several others experiencing fractures in their limbs. Others sustained minor injuries.
The injured parties were transported to the Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital for treatment, where tight security has been established across three wards due to the ongoing tensions. Meanwhile, nine injured individuals from the ST community are receiving care at the Mundargi Government Hospital.
Following the incident, police reported that tensions remained high in the village, necessitating a significant law enforcement presence to maintain order. Gadag Superintendent of Police Rohan Jagadish visited the site for an assessment and confirmed that the clash was related to a water issue, ensuring that appropriate legal action will follow any complaints received.
Authorities also suspect that existing enmity between the two groups may have fueled the violence. Assistant Commissioner Gangappa visited both the incident site and the hospitals, checked on the injured, and directed officials to provide adequate medical care.
