Is the India-US Trade Deal a Threat to Farmers in Gujarat?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 16 (NationPress) On the inaugural day of the Gujarat Assembly's budget session, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) raised concerns over the India-US trade agreement, cautioning that it could adversely affect farmers, livestock rearers, and small-scale industries both in Gujarat and nationwide.
AAP MLA Gopal Italia, addressing the media outside the assembly, claimed the central government entered into this agreement "under pressure from the United States."
He characterized the deal as "one-sided," asserting that it would primarily favor the United States at the expense of domestic producers. "This one-sided trade deal will benefit the US while harming farmers, livestock rearers, and small industries across Gujarat and India," Italia asserted.
He elaborated on the agreement's implications, stating: "Previously, Indian goods faced a 0% tax in the US; now an 18% tax will be applied. India has abolished taxes on the import of numerous US agricultural products."
Italia warned of severe consequences for local producers, saying: "If US products flood our market, it will devastate our farmers and livestock rearers. If milk and cotton are imported cheaply from the US, what will become of the local milk and cotton produced by our farmers?"
"The AAP vehemently opposes the trade deal between India and the United States. We demand its cancellation to protect the interests of farmers and livestock rearers in Gujarat," he stated.
Italia also pointed out procedural issues in addressing the matter: "I sought an audience with the Governor regarding the trade deal issue but was denied a meeting, which I find unfortunate."
These remarks were made as the Gujarat Assembly commenced its budget session, which is set to continue until late March.
Finance Minister Kanu Desai is scheduled to present the state budget for 2026-27 on Tuesday.
