New Delhi, Dec 25 (NationPress) Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva expressed on Thursday that the filing of an FIR against Aam Aadmi Party leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjeev Jha, and Adil Ahmed Khan for allegedly offending Christian sentiments has laid bare their insensitive and trivial political tactics.
Sachdeva remarked that after the people of Delhi voted them out of power, AAP leaders have resorted to lowly strategies to stay in the spotlight.
He emphasized that leaders who have held significant positions, such as a state minister and an MLA, should maintain a sense of decorum as public representatives.
According to him, the actions of the three AAP leaders, which led to the FIR, constituted an indecent mockery of religious beliefs, which is unacceptable across all faiths.
The Delhi BJP President stated that ridiculing any religion is inappropriate in all situations.
Sachdeva noted that AAP leaders chose to carry out this derogatory act during a time when the minority community was celebrating its festival.
While acknowledging that being in opposition allows for protest on various issues, he insisted there are constitutional and sensitive manners in which to express dissent.
This criticism from the BJP leader follows an FIR lodged against AAP leaders for allegedly offending Christian sentiments through an inappropriate portrayal of Santa Claus in a political video related to the city's air quality.
A police source revealed that the FIR names AAP leaders for featuring a Santa Claus wearing a gas mask and portraying him as "fainted" in a video shared on their social media accounts on December 17 and 18.
The AAP leaders are facing charges under Section 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which holds a penalty of up to one year.
This section penalizes the intentional wounding of someone's religious sentiments through various means, aiming to safeguard religious harmony and freedom of expression.
The FIR was initiated based on a complaint from advocate Kushboo George, who claimed that the AAP leaders depicted Santa Claus in a derogatory manner in their video.
The complaint stated that the video is part of a political skit filmed in the Connaught Place area of Central Delhi.
George asserted that using Santa Claus as a prop in the video and portraying him as fainting was deliberate and intended to insult the religious sentiments of Christians.
