CM Adhikari to address Matua community on CAA at Thakurbari Conference
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is expected to deliver a significant message on the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and its implications for the Matua community during his address at the 2nd International Matua Gosai Conference at Thakurbari in Thakurnagar, Bangaon, North 24 Parganas on Sunday, 1 November. The visit marks Adhikari's first appearance at the ancestral home of the Matua leadership since he assumed charge as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal in May.
Why This Visit Matters
The Matua community — a Backward Class group with roots in erstwhile East Pakistan, present-day Bangladesh — has long sought formal citizenship guarantees under the CAA. Political observers note that considerable confusion and ambiguity around the Act's provisions continue to persist among Matua residents across West Bengal. Adhikari's address is expected to offer clarity and reassurance, making the conference politically significant beyond its religious character.
This is the first time the Chief Minister is visiting Thakurbari in his official capacity, having previously attended as the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
BJP's Matua Vote Bank
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has cultivated a strong electoral base among Matua voters since the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. That consolidation proved decisive in the subsequent state Assembly elections, which ended the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee's All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and brought the BJP to power in West Bengal for the first time since independence. Adhikari's visit is widely read as an effort to reinforce that bond ahead of future electoral cycles.
Logistics and Security
The Chief Minister will travel by helicopter from Kolkata, landing at a helipad at Chandpara, before proceeding by road to Thakurbari. The entire Thakurnagar area has been placed under a comprehensive security cover. Multiple administrative officials have already conducted advance reconnaissance visits, and last-minute preparations are under way on behalf of the Matua Mahasangha.
Upon arrival, Adhikari is scheduled to first offer puja at the temple before joining the conference.
Post-Conference Programme
Following the conference, the Chief Minister will have lunch at the residence of Shantanu Thakur, the local BJP Lok Sabha member from Bangaon and Union Minister of State. Adhikari will also meet representatives of the Matua Mahasangha before returning to Kolkata.
'After arriving at Thakurnagar, the Chief Minister will first offer puja at the temple. Then he will join the 2nd International Matua Gosai Conference. After the conference, the Chief Minister will have lunch at my residence and also meet with representatives of the Matua Mahasangha. After completing all the programmes, he will leave for Kolkata from there,' Thakur said.
What to Watch
Any formal statement by Adhikari on the timeline or process for citizenship grants under the CAA could have immediate political and administrative ramifications for a community that spans several Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies in West Bengal. Observers will be watching closely for specifics on implementation — particularly whether the Centre has communicated a fresh roadmap to the state government.
