Political Turmoil in Assam: AIUDF MLA Zakir Hussain Laskar Resigns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, March 6 (NationPress) The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is experiencing significant internal strife in Assam as another party MLA, Zakir Hussain Laskar, who serves the Hailakandi Assembly constituency, has resigned.
On Friday, Laskar made it known that he has departed from the party, further adding to the political instability surrounding the AIUDF with the upcoming electoral cycle approaching.
However, the reasons behind Laskar's resignation remain undisclosed.
This exit occurs while the AIUDF is concurrently dealing with disciplinary measures against two other legislators for purportedly engaging in activities against the party's interests.
The party's central committee has suspended Abdul Aziz, the representative from Badarpur, and Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, the MLA from the Sonai seat, who also held the position of vice-president. Both individuals face a six-year suspension from the AIUDF.
In the suspension notification, the party stated it had been monitoring the actions of the two MLAs, labeling their behavior as controversial and harmful to the party’s integrity.
The leadership accused them of damaging the party's reputation and breaching party discipline.
Furthermore, it was claimed that the suspended legislators were showing allegiance to a rival political party and were preparing to shift their loyalty.
The suspension was enacted in accordance with the party's constitutional guidelines and was endorsed by Hafiz Bashir Ahmed, the AIUDF General Secretary (Administration).
Previously, on Thursday, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya indicated that his departure was made after discussions with various societal groups.
"Today, I have decided to leave the AIUDF. This decision comes after consulting with community members for the pursuit of peace and harmony," he stated.
Barbhuiya did not reveal any future political aspirations or whether he plans to join another political entity. Nonetheless, speculation suggests that Barbhuiya may align with the BJP's ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and aims to contest elections in the Sonai Assembly seat in the Cachar district.
He has been known for his close associations with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the past several years.
Barbhuiya's actions occur amidst a backdrop of political realignments in Assam as parties gear up for the forthcoming Assembly elections.
In recent weeks, numerous leaders across various parties have switched affiliations or signaled potential changes, indicating a dynamic political environment in the state.
Karim Uddin Barbhuiya is a notable figure from southern Assam and has been linked with the AIUDF for many years, representing the politically significant Sonai Assembly constituency in the Barak Valley region.
