Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Oct 9 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to announce an array of projects valued at Rs 1,816 crore in New Delhi on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in what is being hailed as a historic mission to rejuvenate the Yamuna river.
The initiative is designed to address the persistent water and sewerage challenges faced by the national capital while working towards restoring the river's purity.
Home Minister Shah will both inaugurate and lay the groundwork for numerous vital projects totaling over Rs 1,816 crore, which include plans for clean water supply and various specialized projects aimed at rejuvenating and purifying the river.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, in a statement released by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), emphasized that cleaning and reviving the Yamuna is a top priority for the Delhi government. She mentioned that the state administration is receiving comprehensive support from the Centre for this initiative.
"Restoring the purity of the Yamuna is a top priority of the Delhi government, which is receiving full support from the Centre," Gupta stated.
According to the announcement, the forthcoming projects will tackle the fundamental causes of pollution by enhancing water and sewerage infrastructure.
These initiatives will involve the construction and upgrading of sewage treatment plants (STPs) and sewer lines, which are crucial in ensuring that untreated sewage no longer discharges into the Yamuna.
Gupta elaborated that 22 major drains throughout Delhi are being fitted with STPs to prevent the direct release of sewage into the river.
The treated water from these facilities will be returned to the Yamuna, which is expected to significantly lower pollution levels and enhance water quality over time.
The Chief Minister reiterated her government's commitment to making the Yamuna clean and revitalized, fulfilling a key promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its Assembly election manifesto earlier this year.
"The Delhi government is determined to make the Yamuna pollution-free, clean, and revitalized, in accordance with the BJP's manifesto promises for the Assembly polls in February this year," she added.
In a call to action for citizens, Gupta urged the public to actively participate in the river-cleaning initiative, highlighting that the success of this effort relies on community cooperation.
