New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday conveyed heartfelt greetings to the residents of Assam in celebration of Asom Divas. He emphasized that the past nine years under the Modi-led NDA government have fostered peace and stability in the region, evolving it into a flourishing hub for development and education.

He reiterated the government's dedication to maintaining this momentum in the years to come.

Amit Shah shared his sentiments on social media platform 'X', stating, “Warm greetings to our sisters and brothers of Assam on #AsomDivas. This day honors the illustrious Ahom era and strengthens our pledge to safeguard Assam's rich culture, a source of pride for every Indian.”

“Over the last nine years, the Modi-led NDA administration has initiated a period of tranquility, transforming Assam into a center for progress and learning, and is determined to perpetuate this advancement. May this day reinforce our unity and enrich our cultural ties,” he added.

Asom Divas, observed every year on December 2, is a public holiday in Assam, commemorating the arrival of Chaolung Sukapha, the founder and inaugural monarch of the Ahom kingdom. Today, Assam hosts more than 30 million inhabitants, and Asom Divas serves as a significant reminder of its cultural and historical heritage.

Also referred to as Asom Day or Sukapha Divas, the event celebrates Sukapha’s leadership journey. He was a prince from the Tai kingdom of Mong Mao, located near modern-day Ruili in Yunnan, China. After being denied his legitimate claim to the throne, he embarked on a protracted migration. Following a nearly 13-year journey that included crossing the Patkai mountains, Sukapha arrived in Namrup in southeast Assam in 1228, where he established the Ahom kingdom.

Sukapha reigned for six centuries and is considered one of the most pivotal figures in Assam’s history. Under his leadership, the Ahom dynasty successfully resisted formidable opponents such as the Mughal Empire and laid the groundwork for a cohesive administrative and cultural identity. His respectful engagement with the tribal communities of Assam earned him widespread admiration, enabling him to create a robust and inclusive kingdom. Thus, he is often hailed as the architect of “Bor Asom”, meaning greater Assam.

The celebrations of Asom Divas exhibit the vibrant heritage of the state. The day commences with traditional music and indigenous dances like Bagurumba, Bihu, and Bhortal. Various cultural events, award ceremonies, and grand processions are organized throughout the state to honor Sukapha’s contributions and celebrate Assam’s unity and diversity.
