Amaravati, March 18 (NationPress) The government of Andhra Pradesh has officially launched the “Divyang Shakti” initiative, positioning itself among a select few Indian states to offer complimentary bus travel for individuals with disabilities. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu introduced this scheme, emphasizing its significance in fostering an inclusive and equitable society. This initiative builds on the earlier success of the free bus travel program for women, now extending similar benefits to those with disabilities.
In a symbolic gesture, the Chief Minister, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and IT & Education Minister Nara Lokesh, took a special bus ride from Mangalagiri to Penumaka, receiving an enthusiastic response from the public along the way.
During this journey, the leaders engaged with individuals with disabilities, gaining insights into their experiences, understanding their challenges, and collecting feedback on government welfare measures.
A government statement indicated that this interaction highlighted the pressing mobility challenges faced by beneficiaries, underscoring the urgent need for accessible public transport. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling barriers and ensuring dignity, independence, and equal opportunities for everyone.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction, stating that in just 21 months, the coalition government has launched various initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of citizens. He conveyed that the introduction of 'Divyang Shakti' has filled him with immense joy.
Individuals with disabilities are indeed unique talents, possessing the strength to overcome obstacles and attain success. Previously, we supported this community through the 'Cheyutha' program, which provided tricycles and two-wheelers to enhance their self-confidence,” he noted.
Chandrababu Naidu asserted that this government is the first to offer a pension of Rs 6,000 to individuals with disabilities, having increased it from just Rs 500 previously.
After the bus journey, the Chief Minister hosted a special lunch for the beneficiaries, joined by Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and Minister Nara Lokesh.
The “Divyang Shakti” initiative is a groundbreaking welfare program, offering free bus travel on APSRTC services, including City Ordinary, Metro Express, Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, and Express buses. This program applies to individuals with over 40 percent disability across 21 categories and is projected to benefit approximately 12.76 lakh people, including their attendants. By enhancing transport accessibility, this scheme will significantly improve opportunities for education, healthcare, employment, and social engagement.
The government has allocated an annual budget of Rs 207 crore for the successful implementation of this initiative.
