The 86-year-old head of the Veljan Group of Companies was attacked at his home in Hyderabad on Thursday night. His murder came to light on Saturday following the arrest of his grandson.
Keerthi Teja, who had recently returned from the United States, allegedly stabbed his grandfather 73 times during a fierce argument regarding property distribution.
Janardhan Rao, originally from Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, had been residing in Somajiguda for several months. He had recently made his eldest daughter’s son, Srikrishna, a Director at Veljan Group and transferred shares valued at Rs 4 crore to Keerthi Teja, the son of his second daughter, Sarojini Devi.
On the day of the incident, Sarojini Devi and Keerthi Teja visited Janardhan Rao’s house, leading to a violent dispute over property allocations. Feeling wronged, Keerthi Teja allegedly pulled out a knife he had brought and stabbed his grandfather multiple times, resulting in his immediate death.
Sarojini Devi, who had gone to the kitchen to serve tea, rushed back upon hearing the disturbance and attempted to intervene. In the process, she sustained four stab wounds from her son’s attack.
The grandson also threatened the security guard who witnessed the attack before fleeing the scene.
The Panjagutta police promptly opened a murder case and commenced their investigation, leading to the arrest of the 29-year-old suspect, who was later presented in court and placed in judicial custody.
Authorities are investigating whether the accused has drug-related issues.
Known for his charitable contributions, Rao had made significant donations to the Government General Hospital in Eluru and the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD).
