Is Anurag Thakur Free to Engage in BCCI Activities Again?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has officially lifted the restrictions imposed on BJP MP and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, allowing him to hold a position within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This decision comes nearly nine years after his removal as the president of the cricket organization.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi modified the ruling from January 2017, which mandated Thakur to “cease and desist” from participating in BCCI activities.
In granting Thakur's request, the Chief Justice noted that the ban was not meant to be a permanent disqualification.
The Supreme Court highlighted that the prohibition had lasted nearly nine years and that Thakur had previously issued an unconditional apology regarding the matter.
The Apex Court made it clear that Thakur, the Member of Parliament for Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, is now permitted to engage in the internal, administrative, and other operations of the BCCI, in line with its established regulations.
Thakur was dismissed as BCCI president on January 2, 2017, for his refusal to implement the recommendations set forth by the Justice R. M. Lodha Committee concerning structural and governance reforms within the cricket body.
The earlier ruling by a bench led by then Chief Justice T.S. Thakur determined that BCCI leadership had taken an obstructionist stance against the Supreme Court's mandated reforms.
At that time, the Supreme Court mandated that Anurag Thakur, in his role as president, and Ajay Shirke, the BCCI secretary, must “immediately cease and desist” from any involvement with the BCCI’s operations, while also initiating contempt proceedings against Thakur.
Furthermore, the Supreme Court not only barred him from participating in the functioning of the cricket body but also ordered that a Committee of Administrators oversee the BCCI.
