Approximately 100 Individuals from Bangladesh and Rohingya Detained at Agartala Railway Station in 5 Months

Agartala, Dec 27 (NationPress) Around 100 infiltrators, comprising 87 Bangladeshi nationals, were taken into custody in the last five months solely at the Agartala railway station. Meanwhile, numerous other intruders from across the border were apprehended in different parts of Tripura, according to officials on Friday.
Following the turmoil in Bangladesh that commenced in July, particularly after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on August 5, there has been a significant surge in infiltration into India's northeastern states.
A senior representative of the Government Railway Police (GRP) noted that approximately 100 Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas were detained at the Agartala railway station between August 1 and December 24.
In addition to the infiltrators, 28 Indian agents were also apprehended for their role in facilitating the illegal crossing of the India-Bangladesh border.
Upon arrest, the Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas informed the security personnel that they aimed to travel to Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and other Indian cities in search of employment.
In the past five months, around 600 Bangladeshi nationals and over 63 Rohingyas were detained by the GRP, Border Security Force (BSF), and Tripura Police from the Agartala railway station and various other locations in Tripura after unlawfully entering India.
During this year (2024), 55 Rohingyas among 700 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were caught in Tripura, alongside contraband valued at approximately Rs 50 crore seized solely by the BSF.
The Rohingyas crossed into India after escaping from camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, where over one million displaced Rohingyas from Myanmar have resided since 2017.
Both detained Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas conveyed to Indian security officials that their illegal entry into India was motivated by the pursuit of jobs and shelter.
A BSF spokesperson stated that following the unrest in Bangladesh which began in June-July, the border protection force has escalated its operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to thwart infiltration, exfiltration, and trans-border crimes, including contraband smuggling.
On several occasions, the BSF has successfully thwarted infiltration attempts by hundreds of Bangladeshi nationals, comprising both Hindus and Muslims.
