Jammu, April 18 (NationPress) The army announced on Friday that it has initiated an enquiry into the alleged mistreatment of a civilian in the Rajouri district of J&K.

A statement from the Defence Ministry revealed that reports have emerged claiming that certain individuals were allegedly mistreated by army personnel in the Rajouri district.

The statement mentioned that the army had received intelligence regarding possible terrorist movements in a vehicle within this sensitive region, leading to the conduct of search operations. Initial reports indicate that when stopped, the civilian attempted to seize the soldiers' weapon, resulting in a confrontation.

“Nevertheless, an enquiry has been launched. If any personnel are found to have acted inappropriately, stringent action will be enforced in line with the prevailing laws,” the army stated.

“The Indian Army remains committed to maintaining the highest levels of professionalism and discipline during counterterrorism operations. All community members are urged to continue their cooperation with the Indian Army to ensure collective security in this sensitive region,” it added.

According to reports, on Thursday, a vehicle was halted in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri at a ‘naka’ (checkpost) established by the army.

The vehicle was transporting three individuals headed to a wedding. When two of the three occupants exited and informed the soldiers that the third person was a senior professor from Delhi, the soldiers insisted he also exit, leading to a physical altercation.

There have been previous instances of discord between the army and civilians in various locations.

The security forces have consistently acted swiftly by launching inquiries into instances of excessive force by personnel when such incidents are reported.

In numerous cases, significant penalties have been imposed on army or security forces personnel following confirmation of such events through departmental inquiries.
