Itanagar, Jan 11 (NationPress) Chief Minister Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh officially launched an ambitious expedition to navigate the full course of the Brahmaputra river within Indian borders, with the goal of enhancing adventure tourism and elevating environmental awareness, according to officials.

A spokesperson from the Defence sector reported that this month-long adventure, organized by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), is set to begin from Gelling in Arunachal Pradesh on January 14 and conclude at Dhubri-Hatsingimari in Assam on February 14.

The spokesperson mentioned that this extraordinary journey, a first of its kind, will cover an impressive 916 kilometers of the Brahmaputra river, highlighting its stunning vistas and challenging rapids.

The expedition's goals include promoting adventure tourism, raising awareness about environmental issues, and motivating youth to participate in adventure sports.

During the flag-off event in Itanagar, Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal, Director of NIMAS, briefed the Chief Minister, who also serves as the Vice President of NIMAS, regarding the expedition's aims, challenges, and expected outcomes.

The Chief Minister engaged with the entire team, extending his blessings and expressing confidence in their ability to successfully complete this formidable undertaking.

Khandu also voiced his eagerness to welcome the team upon their return.

This groundbreaking expedition is set to stand as a testament to the unyielding human spirit and will significantly advance the profile of river rafting as a recreational sport in India, as highlighted by the defence spokesperson.

In a related effort, the Indian Army has initiated a spiritual tour for 22 senior villagers from West Kameng and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh under ‘Operation Sadbhavana and the Vibrant Village Programme’.

This initiative seeks to promote cultural preservation, spiritual growth, and national unity, according to the spokesperson.

Flagged off on Friday, the tour provides participants, including village leaders and veterans, their first opportunity to travel beyond their remote communities, thereby strengthening socio-cultural connections.

The group will visit significant spiritual landmarks, such as the World Buddhist Centre, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Dalai Lama Temple, and Mahabodhi Temple, fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

This initiative underscores the Army's commitment to connecting border communities with India's rich cultural heritage, reinforcing national pride and integration, as stated by the spokesperson.
