What Does the Release of the 2-nm Qualcomm Chip by Ashwini Vaishnaw Mean for the Country?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 7 (NationPress) - On Saturday, Union Minister for Railways, Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, unveiled the groundbreaking new two-nanometre Qualcomm chip, emphasizing its significance as a pivotal advancement for the nation.
During the inauguration of Texas Instruments' latest product research and development facility in Bengaluru, Minister Vaishnaw declared, "I am thrilled to announce that we have launched the 2 nanometer wafer and chip at Qualcomm. This marks a series of developments as companies are now crafting end-to-end products in India."
He further noted, "The era where most back-office development occurred here is over. Now, everything from customer product definition to design, final silicon production, and validation is being executed within India," he stated.
"This is a monumental development for our nation and our industry. I extend my gratitude to the pioneers at Qualcomm who embraced the challenge years ago when I urged them to pursue advanced designs in India. Their commitment has made this possible," said Union Minister Vaishnaw.
He congratulated the entire team for their efforts in achieving this milestone in India.
Regarding the wafer, the Minister explained, "This wafer comprises dies containing nearly 20 to 30 billion transistors. Just one die, the small square shown here, holds approximately 20 billion transistors, which translates to 2,000 crore or 20 lakh crore in numerical terms."
Displaying the compact silicon chip, he noted that it integrates both GPU and CPU within this small form factor.
"The resulting product will be a module that operates as an AI computer on desktops, cameras, Wi-Fi routers, or within any device on machines, automobiles, or trains. Such advancements are underway," the Minister added.
"This breakthrough firmly establishes India alongside countries engaged in cutting-edge chip design, alongside companies like AMD that have showcased such capabilities," he asserted.
Union Minister Vaishnaw also highlighted, "India is making great strides in semiconductor manufacturing and chip design." He acknowledged that while the semiconductor sector is relatively nascent in the country, the ecosystem is rapidly developing and gearing up for substantial growth.
This development signifies a transformation for India, shifting from being primarily a software provider and back-office to an end-to-end hub for semiconductor product design and development.
