The main purpose of World Cancer Day is to enhance awareness regarding cancer and to promote its prevention, early detection, and treatment, as a significant number of individuals both nationally and globally are affected, aiming to decrease cancer-related fatalities.
Islam Ali, a resident from Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, shared with IANS: "My wife Afsari Begum has been receiving cancer treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme at Tata Hospital in Mumbai for over six months. She is undergoing chemotherapy, and her medical expenses are being covered by the Ayushman Card."

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a national health insurance initiative by the Indian government, launched on September 23, 2018, aimed at offering free health insurance coverage to the economically weaker sections of society. The scheme covers the bottom 50% of the population and has expanded to include all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their economic status.
Individuals enrolled in the program access primary care from a family doctor, and when further care is required, PM-JAY offers complimentary secondary health care for specialized treatment and tertiary health care for hospitalization needs.
AB PM-JAY was first rolled out in 2018 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. By December 26, 2020, the scheme was extended to the Union Territories of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh.
This scheme grants health coverage to 10 crore households, benefiting 50 crore Indians, providing a financial cover of Rs 5 lakh per family per year for medical services in empaneled public and private hospitals.
