Should Imran Khan Be Treated with Dignity? Azharuddin Appeals
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 18 (NationPress) The former captain of the Indian cricket team, Mohammed Azharuddin, has made a heartfelt appeal for the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, to be treated with the respect he deserves.
In his capacity as a minister for minorities welfare in the Telangana government, Azharuddin took to ‘X’ on Tuesday to show his support for Khan, who famously led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 World Cup and is currently imprisoned.
“I am deeply saddened to learn about Imran bhai. Cricket has provided us with many shared experiences, and as a fellow sportsman who has had the privilege of learning from him, I earnestly request that he be treated with dignity. I am praying for his health and strength for his family,” Azharuddin wrote.
His call for dignified treatment of Imran Khan followed a petition signed by 14 former international captains, urging the Pakistani government and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ensure that Khan receives adequate medical care.
The petition also demands that proper legal support be provided to Khan. Reports indicate that the health of the 73-year-old has been declining while in custody.
This letter, addressed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is co-signed by notable figures including Greg Chappell, Belinda Clark, Michael Atherton, Nasser Hussain, Sunil Gavaskar, and others.
It has been reported that Khan has lost 85 percent vision in his right eye, and his family claims they have been denied visitation rights.
Both Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have been incarcerated since August 2023, following Khan's ousting from power in 2022.
He is currently facing multiple corruption charges and is serving a lengthy sentence of 31 years, with the latest verdict issued in December 2025.
