Why Has Humayun Kabir's 'Babri Yatra' in Bengal Been Reduced from 265 km to Just 22 km?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) The path for the 'Babri Yatra' (rally for the Babri Mosque), organized by the suspended Trinamool Congress legislator Humayun Kabir, has been drastically shortened. Originally slated to commence at 10 a.m. on Thursday from Palashi in the Nadia district and conclude at Itahar in North Dinajpur, the rally was to span a total of 265 kilometers. However, on Thursday, the rally will now initiate from Palashi and terminate at Rejinagar in Murshidabad district, covering merely 22 kilometers.
The format of the rally has also undergone changes. Initially, it was planned to feature 100 vehicles, each accommodating six individuals, including the driver, which would have led to a participation of 600 people. In contrast, the revised itinerary will now see the Babri Yatra as a more modest procession.
Questions have arisen regarding the rationale behind the reduction of the Babri Yatra route. Kabir, who represents the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in the minority-rich Murshidabad district, stated that the route was minimized due to a lack of necessary police permission across the three districts originally included in the rally.
In response, police officials contended that formal requests for such an extensive rally were not submitted.
Kabir asserts that the complete rally, as initially intended, will take place at a later date. Elaborating on the purpose of the rally, Kabir mentioned that misinformation regarding the construction of the proposed Babri Masjid in Beldanga in Murshidabad has been propagated by various vested interests, and this rally aims to combat that misinformation and educate the public about the construction.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Beldanga Mosque commenced on Wednesday, with Kabir personally laying bricks at the site.
Kabir indicated that the construction will be completed within three years, with the total cost of the structure estimated at around Rs 55 crore. The mosque's gate will stand at a height of 14 meters and a width of 5 meters, with the gate's construction alone projected to cost approximately Rs 5 crore.
The foundation stone for the mosque was laid on December 6 of the previous year. The Beldanga structure is inspired by the original mosque in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress just prior to the foundation stone's laying.
In the meantime, Kabir has established a new political entity, the Janata Unnayan Party, calling for alliances with all anti-BJP and anti-Trinamool Congress factions for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
However, apart from discussions with the AIMIM, founded by Asaduddin Owaisi, his alliance negotiations have seen limited progress.
