Is Illegal Liquor Thriving While Bardoli Sugar Factory Faces Corruption?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Surat, Feb 8 (NationPress) The President of Gujarat Congress, Amit Chavda, on Sunday criticized the state administration for its inability to maintain law and order, accusing it of widespread corruption at the Bardoli Sugar Factory in the Surat district.
During a media briefing, Chavda asserted that illegal activities had surged in the area overseen by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, stating that "bootleggers and anti-social elements have become rampant."
He stated, "Residents are voicing concerns that liquor and drugs are ruining the youth, and the dominance of criminal elements makes it perilous for sisters and daughters to venture outside at night."
While discussing the Bardoli Sugar Factory, which is known as Asia's largest sugar mill and a crucial establishment for farmers in southern Gujarat, Chavda alleged that it had been "plundered and exploited by corrupt Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officials," noting extensive corruption.
He continued, "Farmers are not receiving fair market prices, pollution levels are escalating, unemployment is increasing, the law and order situation is deteriorating, and corruption is evident across various sectors under the current government."
Chavda emphasized Bardoli's historical importance, stating that the region was a pivotal hub for the freedom struggle against British rule, led by the country's former Home Minister, Sardar Patel.
He called for the Sardar Memorial to be recognized as a national memorial.
Chavda also declared that the Congress party would amplify its protests in the coming days, stating, "District Congress and taluka Congress committees will take to the streets to advocate for the rights and justice of the people."
These comments arise amidst an escalated campaign by the Congress in Gujarat, targeting the state government and particularly Home Minister Sanghavi, regarding law and order issues and the supposed illegal liquor and drug trade.
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani has been leading these accusations, claiming that the government has not succeeded in curbing illegal liquor and drug networks and questioning the efficacy of policing under the Home Department.
The party has linked these claims to broader assertions of governance failures and public safety issues.
The Congress has indicated that it will persist in raising these concerns through demonstrations and public outreach efforts, positioning law and order, farmer distress, and allegations of corruption as significant political matters in the state.
