Kolkata, Aug 2 (NationPress) A West Bengal court has sentenced four individuals to life imprisonment for the heinous crime of burning alive a mother and her daughter in the East Midnapore district's Haldia five years ago.
The ruling was delivered by the Tamluk district and sessions court, which dealt with a case that shocked the state.
In February 2020, the charred remains of a mother and daughter were discovered along the banks of the Haldi river in the Jhikurkhali area of East Midnapore.
The main perpetrator, identified as Saddam Hossain, was a local resident who had formed a relationship with both the mother, Rama Dey, and her daughter, Jessica.
Originally from Barrackpore in the North 24 Parganas district, they relocated to Haldia to live with Saddam.
Initially, Saddam's connection was solely with Rama, but during their time together in Haldia, he also became involved with Jessica.
Eventually, Saddam married Jessica, causing a rift between them.
It was reported that Saddam attempted to extricate himself from both relationships but failed.
Investigators found that Saddam, along with three accomplices, administered sleeping pills to the mother and daughter before transporting them to the riverside area of Jhikurkhali.
“Believing they were dead after ingesting the pills, the accused then doused them in petrol and set them ablaze. Local residents, alerted by the smoke, rushed to the scene and apprehended Saddam,” an officer from the district police stated.
The Durgachak police station filed the charge sheet just 90 days post-incident.
After a lengthy trial lasting five years, the Tamluk District Court finally delivered its verdict on Saturday.
The primary offender, Saddam, along with his accomplices Manjur Alam Mallick, Shukdev Das, and Aminur Hossain, received life sentences.
“I believe this judgment lacks evidential support. We will appeal to the high court against this ruling,” remarked Subrata Kumar Maiti, the defense attorney.
