Why is the Bengal government hesitant to allocate land for barbed fencing at the border? Amit Shah raises concerns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 30 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of ignoring his seven letters requesting adequate land allocation for the Border Security Force (BSF) at the international border with Bangladesh.
"I have sent seven letters to the Chief Minister regarding the land allotment for the BSF. There have been three meetings at the secretary level in West Bengal on this issue. My question is, why is the West Bengal government hesitant to allocate land for barbed fencing despite these discussions? Currently, the BSF faces accusations of failing to prevent illegal infiltration. Without proper barbed fencing, how can the BSF ensure effective border security?" Shah questioned.
He also addressed the issue of illegal infiltration in West Bengal while refuting claims by the CPI(M)-led Left Front and some state Congress leaders that Mamata Banerjee's position is secure due to a covert agreement between the BJP and Trinamool Congress.
“I assure them that the BJP will never have an understanding with any political party that encourages illegal infiltration to safeguard their voter base. This infiltration is a grave issue, as the demographic landscape of the state is shifting because of it. If this illegal infiltration is not curbed immediately, the hardships faced by the people of West Bengal will escalate dramatically in the future,” the Union Home Minister stated during a press conference.
He further accused the West Bengal government of undermining the regulations set by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), which oversees central service officers, during the appointment of senior officials such as the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police.
“The DoPT rules are frequently compromised in West Bengal based on convenience,” Shah claimed.
