Bengal Government Reshuffles Police Inspectors Before Election Announcement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 15 (NationPress) Just hours ahead of the formal announcement by the Election Commission regarding the Assembly elections in West Bengal, the state government executed a significant reshuffle of police officials on the ground.
As reported by a senior official from the state government, a total of 27 Inspectors along with the Officers-in-Charge (ICs) of 12 police stations have been reassigned.
Numerous Inspectors from the Diamond Harbour Police District are among those who have been relocated. Additionally, ICs from various police stations throughout the Bidhannagar, Barrackpore, and Chandannagar Police Commissionerates have also been transferred. Furthermore, several Inspectors in the East Midnapore district are included in this reshuffle.
A notification detailing these changes was circulated by the state police department mere hours before the announcement of the election schedule.
Officials from the Election Commission are set to address a press conference in New Delhi at 4 p.m. today to unveil the election timetable for West Bengal along with other states preparing for elections.
In the meantime, the transfer orders explicitly direct the involved officials to report to their new assignments promptly across various districts, including North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Jalpaiguri, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South Dinajpur, and Hooghly.
The primary opposition party, BJP, has raised concerns regarding these transfers.
BJP leader Sajal Ghosh stated: "These transfers have been executed prematurely to secure that the Election Commission cannot subsequently modify these postings. We recognized this tactic from the outset. However, it is not stipulated anywhere that the Election Commission is prohibited from reassigning these officers later. Their professional backgrounds are under review; the Election Commission will assess these factors if necessary."
Interestingly, a similar reshuffle was conducted by the state government just three weeks prior, during which four IPS officers were transferred.
