What Caused the Uproar in Bihar Assembly Over the NEET Student Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 3 (NationPress) The second day of the Budget Session in the Bihar Legislative Assembly was marked by intense debates following the Question Hour.
An adjournment motion regarding the suspected rape and murder of two NEET aspirants was introduced by CPI MLA Arun Singh (Karakat); however, the Speaker rejected the motion, allowing it to be read in the House instead.
Addressing the Assembly, Arun Singh detailed the tragic incidents involving two female students from Jehanabad and Aurangabad, both preparing for the NEET exam while residing in a hostel in Patna, who were reportedly victims of rape and murder.
He highlighted that these occurrences signify a grave failure by the state government in ensuring the safety of women, maintaining law and order, and effectively administering police services.
Arun Singh criticized the police's initial negative response, claiming they denied the allegations of rape and murder while attempting to protect the perpetrators.
He noted that the government only called for a CBI inquiry after public outcry and pressure.
Despite this, Arun Singh argued that a CBI investigation alone is insufficient for achieving credible justice.
He insisted that the inquiry should be overseen by a sitting Supreme Court judge, with a strict timeline for justice delivery to the victims’ families.
In response, Speaker Prem Kumar affirmed that the government acknowledged the situation and that appropriate measures are being taken.
He explained that while the adjournment motion was not allowed as per procedural rules, it was read in the House to document the concerns raised.
Nonetheless, opposition MLAs continued to demand a comprehensive discussion, resulting in brief interruptions.
Earlier, RJD lawmakers protested in the Assembly’s portico, advocating for justice in the NEET student case and expressing worries about state law and order.
In a related development, the mother of one of the NEET student victims visited the Jehanabad District Magistrate’s office to present a memorandum, expressing dissatisfaction with the police investigation.
She accused Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and the DGP of attempting to obstruct the case by offering bribes.
She reiterated her call for a transparent investigation and justice, vowing to pursue the truth relentlessly.
