Mokama MLA Anant Singh gets arrest stay in Bihar viral video case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The MP-MLA Court in Gopalganj, Bihar, on Monday, 25 May granted interim relief to Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Singh of Mokama, staying his arrest in connection with a viral video case involving the alleged brandishing of weapons and obscene dancing at a private function. The court reserved its verdict and scheduled the next hearing for 30 May.
What the Court Decided
The presiding judge, after hearing arguments from both sides, directed a stay on Anant Singh's arrest while reserving the final order. A total of nine individuals, including the Mokama legislator, have been named as accused in the case. Notably, the interim protection has been extended only to Anant Singh — the remaining eight accused have not been granted any relief at this stage.
Defence Arguments
A strong legal team represented the JD(U) MLA during the hearing. Senior advocate Kumar Harshvardhan and senior Gopalganj Civil Court advocate Rajesh Kumar Pathak argued for the defence, contending that there was no immediate need for coercive action against the legislator. Kumar Harshvardhan further claimed that the viral footage was an edited video and alleged that his client had been falsely implicated in a fabricated case.
The Viral Video Incident
The case originates from an event on 3 May, when Anant Singh attended a private function in Semrao village under the jurisdiction of Mirganj Police Station in Gopalganj. A video from the gathering subsequently went viral on social media, allegedly showing several individuals brandishing weapons and engaging in obscene dancing. Responding to the controversy earlier, Anant Singh stated that he was unaware of anything that may have occurred after he left the venue and maintained that no such activities took place during his presence.
Section 111 Application and What Comes Next
Speaking to reporters after the hearing, advocate Rajesh Kumar Pathak confirmed the 30 May next date and disclosed that an application had been filed seeking the invocation of Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in the case. The court has not yet accepted that application. The matter is being closely watched given Anant Singh's political profile and the broader scrutiny on law and order in Bihar.
