BJP Accuses Nadia DM of Electoral Misconduct Amid SIR Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 24 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently leveled serious allegations against the District Magistrate (DM), also known as the District Electoral Officer (DEO), of the crucial India-Bangladesh border region in Nadia district, West Bengal. The party claims that the DM has been directing electoral registration officers (EROs) and assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) to engage in irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
BJP's Chief of Information Technology Cell and the party's central observer for West Bengal, Amit Malviya, shared an audio clip via his official account on X, which purportedly captures conversations among electoral officials in Nadia that raise serious concerns regarding the alleged misappropriations occurring during the SIR exercise.
In his post, Malviya emphasized the significance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in Nadia, a highly sensitive border district plagued by issues such as illegal infiltration and high rates of human trafficking.
Malviya specifically identified Anish Dasgupta, the DM-cum-DEO of Nadia, and Nripendra Singh, the Additional District Magistrate (land revenue), as being involved in these dubious activities.
He stated, "We have credible information that there has been a significant violation of the SIR protocols in Nadia. District Electoral Officer Anish Dasgupta and Additional District Magistrate Nripendra Singh were reportedly present in the Nakashipara block on the evening of February 20, 2026, directing ERO and AERO to manipulate the SIR process by registering a substantial number of voters despite evident discrepancies and questionable documentation. Officials were instructed to turn off their mobile phones during this meeting," Malviya asserted.
Furthermore, he expressed concerns that similar actions might be taking place across other blocks under the same administrative apparatus, necessitating an immediate and impartial investigation by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to implement appropriate corrective measures.
Malviya queried, "Why is the Mamata Banerjee administration seemingly interfering in the SIR process? Is there an attempt to protect fraudulent or illegal voters? Reports suggest that this is not an isolated case, as similar issues have emerged from various districts. There are indications that District Magistrates may be attempting to mislead judicial officers at the district level, with evidence reportedly available to the public," he added.
As of now, there has been no response from either of the bureaucrats mentioned by Malviya in his social media post.
