Surat, January 27 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gujarat commenced a candidate evaluation process on Monday at its Udhna office in Surat to assess potential nominees for the by-election to the open Ward No 18.
This vacancy was created after the passing of BJP Corporator Gemar Desai.
A duo of observers, including BJP MLA from the Gandevi Assembly constituency, Naresh Patel, has been dispatched to Surat to review candidates interested in the position.
With the announcement of the local self-government by-elections, the BJP is proactively working to select its candidate for the upcoming by-election.
The evaluation process, led by the team of observers, aims to gather feedback from various aspiring candidates interested in contesting for the vacant seat.
This process is projected to extend into Monday evening, according to party leaders.
After gathering all pertinent insights, the observers will prepare a report for submission to the State Parliamentary Board for further consideration.
A definitive decision will be made regarding which candidate will be nominated for the by-election.
The BJP has expressed optimism about winning this significant seat.
The local body elections in Gujarat are slated for February 16.
The elections will cover several local governance entities, including municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats.
Voting will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with re-polling set for February 17, if required.
The vote counting will take place on February 18, with the entire election process expected to wrap up by February 21.
The elections will encompass various areas, including the Junagadh Municipal Corporation and 66 municipalities, as well as three taluka panchayats.
Additionally, by-elections will be conducted for vacant positions in the municipal corporations of Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, and Surat.
However, the election date for the Kheda District Panchayat remains unannounced.
In accordance with state government policies, the elections will feature reservations for various communities.
Approximately 27 percent of the seats will be reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 14 percent for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and 7 percent for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
These reservations aim to ensure fair representation across different communities within local governance.
The last local body elections in Gujarat occurred two years ago, and since then, many municipalities and panchayats have lacked elected representatives.
The forthcoming elections are anticipated to fill this void and reinstate democratic practices at the grassroots level, promoting more effective governance.
