BJP slams Rahul Gandhi over Punjab remarks, calls it bid to hide INDIA bloc rally failure
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, 4 November launched a sharp attack on Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, asserting that his remarks against the Centre during a rally in Sangrur, Punjab, were a calculated attempt to conceal the alleged failure of the INDIA bloc's 'Dilli Chalo' rally held at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan the previous Sunday.
What Rahul Gandhi Said in Punjab
Addressing a public gathering in Sangrur, Gandhi took aim at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the latter's stated deadline to eradicate drugs. Gandhi said: 'Amit Shah has announced a deadline to eradicate drugs. What deadline has he given? Three years? In three years, Amit Shah may not even be the Home Minister. I don't know what he is talking about. My assessment is that the government itself will fall within a year.'
BJP's Rebuttal: Naxalism, Terrorism, PSUs
BJP National Spokesperson and Member of Parliament Sudhanshu Trivedi, addressing a press conference, rejected Gandhi's remarks point by point. He cited the elimination of Naxalism from the country following a March 31, 2026 deadline set by Home Minister Shah. 'Not only has it been eliminated, but the past 12 months have also marked the first time in 47 years that there has not been a single CRPF casualty in a year,' Trivedi said.
Trivedi further alleged that Gandhi had, in 2011, declared controlling terrorism 'completely impossible', yet India had since curbed it across nearly the entire country, with pockets remaining only in 'three to four districts in South Kashmir', according to Trivedi. The BJP spokesperson also pointed to Gandhi's past statements on public sector undertakings, saying Gandhi had written off Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), State Bank of India (SBI), and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), each of which is now reportedly posting all-time high profits.
BJP Links Remarks to 'Dilli Chalo' Rally Fallout
Trivedi alleged that Gandhi's Punjab visit and rhetoric were driven by a need to deflect attention from the INDIA bloc's rally at Ramlila Maidan, which the BJP characterised as a 'massive failure'. 'The language Rahul Gandhi used during his visit to Punjab is an insult to the people of India,' Trivedi said, further alleging that the gathering at Ramlila Maidan had 'echoed the voices of anti-national forces' — a charge the opposition has not accepted.
Row Over Debate Challenge to PM Modi
Trivedi also responded to Gandhi's standing challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a public debate, calling it a 'mockery of Parliament'. He argued that the Constitution designates Parliament as the 'supreme institution' for debates, and that an LoP opposing Parliamentary discussions amounted to insulting the Constitution. He also alleged that Gandhi has 'a tendency to run away whenever the Prime Minister begins speaking', citing the Manipur debate episode in Parliament as an example.
'Narendra Modi has been the unanimously elected leader of the NDA for 12 years, whereas you are not the leader of the INDIA bloc. There is no entity called the INDIA bloc in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha,' Trivedi added. The BJP leader dismissed Gandhi's recently organised 'mock Parliament' event as an exercise in 'ego', comparing it to courtiers arranging events to please kings. As the war of words intensifies ahead of a string of state electoral cycles, the BJP-Congress political battle is set to sharpen further.
